Sliding Rock is a favorite gathering place for families during the summer. From Memorial Day to Mid-August a lifeguard is on duty from 10am to 5:30. The bath house and restrooms are both accessible to everyone with just a short, paved trail from the parking lot. Grandparents can watch the kids slide down the rock from a viewing area on the top. There is a place to take pictures of the family from the bottom of the waterfall. Sliders will splash down in an 8’ deep pool at the base of the falls.
Looking Glass Falls is 30’ wide and drops 60’ right near the road. There is a small parking area with an overlook, and I think someone might be able to see the falls from the car if they are unable to get out. Several flights of steps lead down to the base of the falls. People were wading in the river below the falls, but that may not be allowed. This is really a beautiful waterfall, almost the size of Dry Falls with a shorter hike. The rock walls of the canyon and the tree stumps in the water at the bottom make interesting photographs.
Across the road from this falls is the Pisgah Fish Hatchery and Center for Wildlife Education. There is an interpretive trail, gift shop, and wildlife exhibits. Groups should call 828-877-4423 for scheduling tours. Be sure to visit the Cradle of Forestry while you are here.
